Shambhala Yoga Centre is the oldest yoga studio on Koh Tao, founded in 1997 and set within the grounds of Blue Wind Resort in North Sairee, around 50 metres from the beach and reachable from both the shoreline and the main road. Over more than two decades it has welcomed more than 50,000 visitors from around the world to its purpose-built sala, a dedicated sacred space just steps from Sairee Beach.
The studio was created to keep traditional yoga alive at a time when the practice has become increasingly mainstream, and its focus is as much on the spiritual and meditative side of yoga as on the physical. Teachers are internationally qualified and experienced practitioners drawing on a range of traditions and lineages, guiding students through Yoga, Pranayama, meditation and Satsang in a space that is welcoming, inclusive and free of competition or pretension.
Classes and schedule
Shambhala runs a consistent weekly timetable, with classes late morning and again in the evening. Morning sessions are Hatha-based, combining static poses and flowing sequences with breath awareness and meditation to energise and tone the body. Evening classes on Monday, Thursday and Saturday are Restorative, a slow, nurturing practice using therapeutic Hatha poses to calm the nervous system and unwind after a day on the island. Teachers are known for accommodating mixed-level classes, keeping the practice accessible to complete beginners while still challenging more experienced yogis.
Practical information
There is no need to pre-book: students simply arrive around ten minutes before class starts. Mats and props are provided. Classes are sold individually or as discounted multi-class packs, making Shambhala an easy fit whether you are dropping in once during your stay or practising daily. For anyone who sees yoga as more than a workout, Shambhala is one of the most established and respected spaces on the island.
